Codnor Castle Cottage, also known as Castle Farm, is fast getting a reputation as one of the
most haunted properties in England.
Dating back to the 17 th century, this isolated former family home was built within the
grounds of the medieval Codnor Castle. First mentioned in the doomsday book of 1086,today
all you can see of the castle are ruins after it came close to be completely dismantled in
1643. The stone and timber that was removed from the castle was used to build 7
farmhouses in the area, Codnor cottage was one of them.
The cottage which now lies abandoned, was the scene of a murder, along with no less than
4 recorded suicides. It is said during the 1950’s one former owner attached a rope to the
attic window and leapt to his death. An accidental death was also recorded, where a woman
fell down the stairs and broke her neck.
Giving the cottage a more sinister look, are the several unusual markings in the attic space.
The cottage is said to have a history of witchcraft and it is believed that the markings were
put there in an attempt to ward off evil spirits.
Paranormal activity at the cottage ranges from dark shadows, to poltergeist activity, one
witness was dragged across the floor by an unseen force whilst sitting on a chair.
Disembodied voices, screams, children’s laughter and items being thrown, are just some of
the ghostly occurrences. On one occasion a stone was thrown and it smashed a window …
from the inside of the locked cottage, witnessed by the staff that were leaving.
A Victorian lady wearing a straw hat as been seen and visitors have witnessed 3 monks that
walk through the rooms.
The attic rooms house a negative energy and people have experienced demonic attacks
here, with many fleeing the building refusing to go back inside.
A knights templar soldier that took refuge in the castle after being injured during battle, has
been seen wandering the grounds outside the cottage. He has also been witnessed running
through the ruins, in what would have been the great hall. A grey lady also walks the
grounds, with the haunting sounds of singing being heard, whenever she is around.
This event is not for the faint hearted.
