Built-in 1883 to house the unfortunate, it was later developed into a union workhouse, where people worked for the food in their belly and the roof over their heads.
Set in the Welsh countryside, this dark foreboding building almost warns prospective visitors to stay away, but many, brave enough not to heed its warnings, have found themselves being the victims of Bron Y Garths paranormal residents.
Run by John Parry Jones and his wife Jane, the site could initially accommodate 150 inmates. It underwent many revamps and by 1875 had expanded to include a vagrant’s ward, with space for six living and working cells. Alongside the main building, there is a mortuary and what is known as ‘the cottage’. This building was
used to house inmates with infectious diseases.
Pain, sorrow, and deprivation became part of daily life for the inmates of the union workhouse. Forced to sleep on wire beds with no mattress, they were even denied a decent night’s sleep. The working cells were used for stone breaking, where the inmate would break pieces of stone and, when they were small enough, pass them through the metal grill on the outside of the cell door.
In 1894 the site was deemed unfit due to the lack of staff and as a result, it was taken over by Merionshire council, before joining the NHS as a hospital in 1948.
Bron Y Garth finally closed its doors in 2009 and has stood silently decaying ever since. The building still has many of its fixtures and fittings from both as a hospital and workhouse, including the vagrants’ cells that remain unchanged.
Misery and suffering seep from within the walls of this building and with many deaths from its time as both the workhouse and the hospital, it is no wonder this building is thought to be one of the most haunted in Wales. Many paranormal incidents have been reported here. A male entity resides within the two-bedded
ward and does his utmost to scare people away. He often snorts at people and likes to move objects to make his disapproval for visitors known.
People have experienced being touched by unseen hands in the cell area, along with the eerie feeling of not being alone. Shadows have been seen, along with apparitions throughout the building. Extreme temperature drops have been felt in otherwise warm rooms, knocking and tapping have been heard seemingly for attention, but also in answer to questions, who is the spirit willing to work with investigators? Is it the lady that has been heard singing in the empty corridors? Are you brave enough to find out?
With a deep dark history dating back almost 200 years, Join the team as we investigate the hospital, prison and mortuary, in an attempt to uncover who still resides within the walls of Bron Y Garth.
