Initially built in 1636 from old shipping timbers almost a thousand years old, there are many spirits said to haunt this 17th-century former inn. Both staff and visitors have reported paranormal activity for many years.

The history of the Four Crosses is as macabre as the land it stands on, and you will need nerves of steel to spend the night here, it is no wonder it is thought to be one of the most haunted buildings in the UK.

Spirits include a cloaked male seen outside on rainy nights, a roundhead soldier, a 19th century drunk named Charlie, and a young boy. A teenage girl is also described as having dishevelled hair, rags for clothes, and bare feet. She scared a member of staff as they met face to face in a corridor; before she turned and disappeared through the wall, the member of staff handed in her notice a few days later!

There is a tragic story of a baby that fell from a table and died after hitting its head in the upper bar area sometime in the 1800s. Could the woman that has been seen walking throughout the inn be that of the baby’s mother?

Perhaps the more mysterious story of the Four Crosses Inn is that of a coachman’s uniform that was found hidden in a chimney breast, perfectly preserved for over 150 years. A hidden oak door was discovered in the 1950s, behind a thin layer of plaster, and with the date 1638 carved into it, a few hidden passageways were uncovered, and the discovery has
given thought to the idea of possibly more below the inn.

A building of this age would have seen love, tragedy, and happy times over its many years. It also would have borne witness to many plots and secrets, so it is no surprise it seems this former inn, is a magnet for all things paranormal. With full apparitions, shadow figures, the feeling of being watched, guests reporting being touched by unseen hands and the eerie sounds of screeching……
