There has been a prison on this site since 1793. Built on the Georgian foundations, the present Victorian building was constructed in 1877. Not only is it one of the oldest prisons in the UK, but it is well known for its paranormal activity.

With over crowding, suicides and on site executions, the walls of this vast abandoned prison hold in many emotions, and is certainly not for the feint hearted. 

A number of executions took place here, with all of them, along with other inmates, being buried in unmarked graves within the walls. Ten remains were discovered in 1972, nine of them were unrecognisable, cremated and scattered at the local crematorium, whilst one was identified and passed to the family, but what of those that wait to be discovered? are these the spirits that walk the now empty corridors, facing the prospect of never being free? 

 

'C' wing is said to be so haunted, many of the guards would refuse to work alone at night. Every night they reported a "grey lady" that walked along the landing towards the execution room. Was she a prisoner? was she guard? Nobody knows who she is, but she is known to interact with people brave enough to call out to her.

Cell doors slamming, footsteps, shadow figures and screams echoing from long empty cells are reported with regularity here, by both staff and visitors.

People have reported the feeling of being unwelcome, the feeling of being watched, being pushed and poked. Are you brave enough to conduct a roll call in the darkness of this vast building?
