With construction completed in 1891, this grade 2 listed building hides many a secret.

There is a maze of areas to explore after dark, with the original courtrooms, safe rooms and the dark foreboding prison cells in the basement.

Capital punishment was used at this site until it was abolished in the 1960s, so this was a feared place, with emotions running high and people fighting for their life, whether or not they had been condemned to the hangman’s noose.

​

The building retains most of its original features, but it is, without doubt, the cells that are the most feared area, with one cell reported to be responsible for a lot of paranormal activity. 

With heavy doors and thick bars, you can try and imagine the world of the incarcerated, with overcrowding rife, fights inevitably broke out, resulting in many deaths, but medical facilities and treatment at the jail would have been few and far between, meaning many inmates would have died from infections or injury before they were treated.

100’s of years’ worth of records have been hidden away, waiting for someone to wipe off the dust, open their pages, and tell of the secrets they hold.

This is a venue not to be missed. Reported activity includes people being touched and pushed. Stones being thrown, voices from empty cells, the rattling of keys and heavy booted footsteps. People have also reported the feeling of pain, rage, and sadness, but there is one spirit that has made his presence abundantly clear many times. He shows himself as a large black mass and radiates the feeling of pure evil. People have reported an overwhelming feeling of absolute fear when this spirit is around.

Afraid to move on and angry at the way they were treated, it is no surprise that spirits walk this building.
