Woodchester Mansion

Approached via a long track that weaves through the trees, you round a bend and there in all its glory is the magnificent Woodchester Mansion, the classic, haunted house.

​

Built on the foundations of the previous House, Woodchester mansion is one of the most haunted buildings in the UK. With the start of the 2nd world war, American and Canadian troops set up camp in the pasture  and commandeered the cellars to store equipment. They used the lakes in Woodchester park to train for the D-Day landings, but sadly during a training session, the bridge they were building collapsed, sending some of the troops to a watery grave, their bodies being stored inside the mansion in a makeshift morgue. A man have been seen in military uniform and 1940’s music has been heard echoing through the empty corridors of the mansion..

One of the more curious rooms is the chapel. People often report the scent of newly distinguished candles, and a man has been seen standing in the corner looking up at the windows, thought to be a stone mason, could it be this man that is behind the small stones that are thrown at guests?

The voice of a lady singing an Irish song has been heard in the kitchen, along with the figure of a small boy that has been seen crouching in the corner, possibly hiding from someone, whilst the tall shadow figure of a man has been seen walking the corridor and appears to be looking for someone. It seems these two ghosts are possibly related to some long-forgotten incident.

A young girl has been seen skipping up and down the grand staircase and has also been seen popping her head around the door at guests conducting  vigils. Children have also been heard laughing whilst guests settle in for the start of their event. On the first-floor corridor, the ghost of a young woman has been seen looking out of the window.

The cellar…what can we say.

The spirit that resides in the cellar does not take kindly to visitors. He has been known to push and touch people, whilst he weaves himself around unsuspecting guests in this very dark, foreboding area and has made people literally flee. A large black mass has also been seen down here.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s also the cloaked figure that growls at people during vigils.
